Major perfume reformulations Ep 9 of 9, 2025, Restrictions on aroma chemicals
Vintage DecantsPerfume reformulations 101:
**Note exact dates for reformulations may vary up to three years within the date I've listed depending on brand, or fragrance.(Per Ifra regulations)**
Created in August 2023 and taken into effect roughly in 2025, IFRA's amendment 51 introduced 48 new restrictions and eliminations of various synthetic ingredients frequently used within modern fragrance.
Most notably new restrictions were placed on Coumarin (tonka bean extract), Aldehydes, Limonene, Geraniol, Citronellol, Cinnamaldehyde (cinnamon extract), synthetic musks, oakmoss, and the removal of Benzyl alcohol and Benzyl Salicylate just to name a few.
This reformulation has especially affected newer classic perfumes that relied on older style ingredients. While a majority of all pre-existing fragrances may receive changes in their scent profile, projection and longevity.
*You can recognize this recall if you have a shorter (new style) ingredient list on the box (See 2023's reform blog in this series) and checking your batch code online.
*It's important to note that some independent niche brands and middle eastern brands may not adhere to these changes, or at least not immediately. However, if a brand is acquired by a larger corporation or they want to attain a stronger mainstream worldwide distribution, compliance with these guidelines may become necessary.
There's an easy to understand article a reddit user created, that I re-posted on my server about Ifra's Amendment 51 you can see here: https://vintagedecants.com/pages/ifra-amendment-51
