Will my decant be exactly how it was when first released?

Due to some of these scents being decades old, along with batch variations, we cannot guarantee if it will be an exact match for the vintage fragrance you may remember. However we can clarify, you will be getting a healthy version of the fragrance (not spoiled) originating from the time frame listed in the description.

I thought fragrance expired?

Fragrances age like fine wine, not spoiled food!

The primary factors that affect the life of a fragrance are oxidation and temperature fluctuations. A well-preserved bottle can act as a time capsule if preserved right.

There is a recommended shelf life that department stores must abide by for a perfume to be distributed to the public. If a fragrance does go "bad" it's sort of like catching a cold. It could happen at any time, it's just a matter if something was to trigger the reaction within the liquid. Dark, almost black liquid may indicate if a fragrance has "turned" but sometimes you never know until you smell it. When shopping for vintage fragrance it's best to cross reference with other bottles from a similar timeline to compare the color of liquid.

From my experience though, it's more rare than you would think to encounter spoiled fragrance. If the bottle has never been sprayed, or not sprayed in years, shake it before use, and do three test sprays first to remove any old liquid from the atomizer for best results!

What defines a "vintage" scent?

We define "deep vintage" as fragrances that were produced before the year 2001. This was a period when a significant shift in the industry happened. New IFRA standards changed the use of raw materials allowed in perfume and were reduced from 0.6 to a 0.1% cap. It was a very noticable mass reformulation. This is when the "long" ingredients lists started to appear on boxes, and the "short" ingredient lists went away.

The term "vintage" we apply to scents created between 2001 and 2023.

Why are some of your perfume bottles not full?

When you purchase from Vintage Decants you will receive a new hand-decanted sample, curated from a high quality used vintage collectors bottle.

Our bottles may not be full because of:

One - Evaporation, That doesn't mean the scent has degraded. With some bottles it happens more than others.

Two - Some bottles I have personally used in the past.

Three - Some bottles it can be rare to find full bottles.

All of our scents are tested for optimal quality before sale.

Why do some of your bottles look drastically different than what the bottle is supposed to look like?

We guarantee every scent we sell is authentic but keep in mind some of our bottles are old and I mean really old. For that reason we have a lot of older bottle styles that have been out of production for years. Over time companies may make changes to an existing perfumes look and appearance. For instance some older Dior EAU Sauvage bottles used to come in a rectangular ribbed style bottle that isn't used anymore. If you don't recognize the bottle, rest assured it still the same fragrance, just in a different bottle style.

Why do you list some of your listings as "unisex"?

Because the scent was originally released for a woman or man, but in my opinion I consider it could be worn by either.

CK1 by Calvin Klein released in 1994, was the first largely successful scent to be marketed as "unisex". Before then mostly every fragrance was strictly marketed for men or women.

In recent years fragrance profiles like Amber, Oriental, Chypre, White floral, and Gourmand are all now marketed unisex. In fact some niche brands abandoned gender specific titles for their fragrances.

If you love fragrance, keep in mind your missing half the picture if you never step outside of your comfort zone.

Do I need to be concerned about counterfeit vintage bottles?

That's the beauty of vintage perfumery, unlike modern perfumery, counterfeit bottles can be rare. It's also why we post multiple angles of the bottle, along with it's batch code to help display it's an authentic bottle. We would never list a spoiled, or unofficial batch for sale.

Is vintage perfume safe?

Yes! Vintage fragrance ages like fine wine in most cases. In fact, most collectors agree perfume gets better with age. The notes can become more intense, and the aroma more potent in some cases.
