Bois Noir EDT (Pre Egoiste) 1987 Bottle, Men Perfume Sample
Fragrance Description:
Chanel Bois Noir EDT (Pre Egoiste), is an aromatic woody scent. It's an extremely rare discontinued fragrance released in 1987 in what would be considered the original formula to Egoiste (1990). It opens with a soft citrus of mandarin and rosewood, quickly giving way to a refined heart of lavender, rose, and coriander. The scent then settles into a rich, creamy base of Mysore sandalwood, bourbon vanilla, and ambrette seed, creating a warm, woody-spicy, slightly sweet and resinous character. In the deep dry down of Bois Noir there is a very light note of leathery castoreum, which I assume they removed and replaced with an actual leather note within Egoiste.
When compared to one another, Égoïste and Bois Noir are very closely related but not identical. Bois Noir is often described as denser, smoother, and more focused on real Mysore sandalwood and rosewood, with a darker, and more natural-feeling drydown. Vintage Égoïste tends to come across as spicier (especially cinnamon), a bit more leatherier, and more “perfumey” with a less conventionally masculine edge because of added rose. Overall, many say the differences are subtle—Bois Noir performs quietly and wears like a second skin as a richer, more exclusive prototype, while vintage Égoïste could be considered the refined, slightly brighter commercial version.
